As a general contractor we know that white isn’t one hue but many. It’s the undertone that makes the difference. Some are reddish, yellowish, greyish, bluish and even greenish. With so many white shades available, it can get overwhelming to select the right white. The most common reaction we get when we suggest white to our clients for their renovation project is…. White is boring!

After years of being considered a drab choice, whites are becoming a favorite. How can you tell which white is which? A simple test is to take a white piece of paper and do a side by side comparison with your sample white. See the difference? Cool whites have blue, gray or green tints that appear clean and crisp, while warm whites have red and yellow tints that feel soft and cozy.

Next step is to determine if you want a cool or a warm white. Cool whites are ideal for rooms with abundant sunlight and pair well in a minimalist, Scandinavian and contemporary styles. As for warm whites they fair better in rooms with no direct sunlight and pair well with neutral, traditional and country styles. Would you be tempted to pick a white for your next renovation project?
